Another Shot in the Arm: Strategies for Implementing COVID-19 Booster Shots in PALTC (Archive 9/9/21)

This webinar will review current guidance related to COVID-19 booster shots for immunocompromised patients and those living and working in PALTC settings. The panel will discuss strategies for accessing, administering, and documenting booster shots in PALTC staff and patients.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Describe current guidance on booster shots/3rd vaccine doses for immunocompromised and other PALTC residents.
  • Identify how to access COVID-19 vaccine for booster shots/3rd doses through long-term care pharmacies.
  • Explain strategies for effectively implementing a booster shot program in PALTC facilities, including co-administration of the flu vaccine with the COVID-19 booster shot.
  • Identify ways to partner with state and local health officials to access and distribute booster shots.

Ashraf, MBBS, is an associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, at University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE, where he also serves as the medical director for the Nebraska Infection Control Assessment and Promotion Program (ICAP) and co-medical director for the Nebraska Antimicrobial Stewardship Assessment and Promotion Program (ASAP). He is a member of SHEA Long-Term Care Special Interest Group, SHEA Education Committee, IDSA Antimicrobial Resistance Committee, and Infection Advisory Committee of AMDA – The Society for PALTC Medicine. Dr. Ashraf is currently working on multiple projects focused on promoting infection prevention and control and antimicrobial stewardship programs in long-term care facilities.

 

claymanArnold Clayman, PD, FASCP, is vice president of Pharmacy Practice & Government Affairs at the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. Prior to that he served as vice president of infusion services for NeighborCare at Home, an Omnicare Company. He has worked in hospital, home infusion, and for many years in long-term care, continuing to develop infusion as a part of comprehensive pharmacy services to patients and residents both in facilities and at home. He has managed the financial and operational aspects of these businesses as well as new business development, P&P, PI, accreditation, and regulatory compliance.

 

eberLeslie Eber, MD, CMD, is board certified in internal medicine and is a certified medical director. Dr. Eber divides her time between clinical practice, medical directorship, and research. She is the medical director of Orchard Park Health Care Center in Greenwood Village, CO. Dr. Eber is an advisor to the governor’s COVID-19 Residential Care Settings Strike Team and provides expertise for the Colorado AHRQ ECHO National Nursing Home COVID-19 Action Network. Dr. Eber is on the national board of AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine and is the immediate past-president of CMDA – The Colorado Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine.


gaurSwati Gaur, MD, MBA, CMDis a geriatrician and medical director of long-term care facilities at Northeast Georgia Health System. She provides medical direction in EMR implementation and optimization for PALTC and is involved in GME. Dr. Gaur is a member of AMDA’s Innovations Platform Advisory Committee (IPAC) and is the current chair of the Infection Advisory Committee. She is a member of Health Systems Innovation-Economics and Technology Committee with the American Geriatrics Society.
