This webinar will review the current state of evidence for optimal staffing levels, controversies about staffing levels and training, and suggestions for future improvements.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the cases for and against minimum staffing ratios.
  • Discuss strategies for utilizing diverse teams to meet resident needs.
  • Discuss current evidence-based recommendations for staffing needs in PALTC.
  • Identify and review technology innovations in providing care for PALTC.
  • Provide recommendations for MDs/NPs/PAs to lead care teams in PALTC.

Wendy Grimes, MSN, LNFA, is the Clinical Director and COO of Lone Star Psychiatric Services and has worked with long-term care populations since 2001. Lone Star Psychiatric Services currently serves over 3000 patients and works with over 250 nursing communities across the state of Texas. Ms. Grimes has served as the Executive Administrator in several long-term care communities in Texas. She received her MSN in administration and is now focused on caring for patients with psychiatric issues living in long-term care settings. Ms. Grimes has a unique perspective because of her interdisciplinary experience an Executive Director, nurse, and contractor in long-term care settings.

Thomas Lehner, MD, CMD, is the Medical Director for long-term care at the Buckeye Community Health Plan since June of 2018. Prior to joining Buckeye, Dr. Lehner was the Medical Director for Northern Ohio at OptumCare, since 2007. He is board certified in Family Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice.

Darakhshan Shamsie, MD, CMD, is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at University of Rochester. Dr. Shamsie has been in Geriatrics since 2000 and has served as medical director for multiple facilities and nursing homes, both for profit and non-profit. She also has served as medical director for an assistant living facility. Dr. Shamsie serves on board of director for Saathi of Rochester, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping South Asian women, men, and children victims of domestic violence.

Jamyl Walker, MSN, APRN, AGNP-C, is an Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner at Baylor Scott and White Health in College Station, TX. She completed her Adult Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program (Masters of Science in Nursing) at The George Washington University, Washington, DC. Ms. Walker provides both primary care and post-acute care in multiple settings including clinic, nursing homes, and assisted living/memory care facilities. She is a 2016 AMDA Futures Scholarship recipient, co-chair of the clinical issues group, and an active member of the NP/PA Advisory Council. Ms. Walker currently serves on the Board of Directors for a non-profit hospice organization, Hospice Brazos Valley, and serves as an active member for the ethics committee and transitional care committee at Baylor Scott and White Health.
