COVID Grand Rounds: Monoclonal Antibodies for Treatment and Prophylaxis of COVID in PALTC: The Why the Who and the How (Archive 9/22/21)

Monoclonal antibodies are now available for treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis for patents in PALTC. This webinar will give participants important background knowledge on available evidence and apply strategies to optimize this treatment for COVID patients and for COVID prophylaxis and outbreak containment. You will hear from PALTC subject matter experts as well as medical director peers who have successfully used mAB in their facilities.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:

• Discuss current FDA approval for mAb for treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis.
• Integrate mAb treatment into facility COVID response plans.
• Describe different methods of mAb administration.
• Apply strategies to overcome common clinical and facility-based barriers to mAb treatment.

Muhammad S. Ashraf, MBBS, is an associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, at University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE, where he also serves as the medical director for the Nebraska Infection Control Assessment and Promotion Program (ICAP) and co-medical director for the Nebraska Antimicrobial Stewardship Assessment and Promotion Program (ASAP). He is a member of SHEA Long-Term Care Special Interest Group, SHEA Education Committee, IDSA Antimicrobial Resistance Committee, and Infection Advisory Committee of AMDA – The Society for PALTC Medicine. Dr. Ashraf is currently working on multiple projects focused on promoting infection prevention and control and antimicrobial stewardship programs in long-term care facilities.

Sabine von Preyss-Friedman, MD, CMD, FACP, is an associate clinical professor at the University of Washington and chief medical officer of Avalon Healthcare. She first became a Certified Medical Director in 1992 and has since been enthusiastically engaged in the practice of post-acute and long-term care. She is currently a member of AMDA’s Board of Directors and serves as president of the Washington State Chapter of AMDA.

Joshua Uy, MD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program Director and the Medical Director of Renaissance Healthcare and Rehabilitation.  Growing up in Michigan, he attended medical school at the University of Michigan, finished family medicine residency at McNeal Hospital near Chicago and a geriatric fellowship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ.  Before COVID, he focused on clinical care and geriatric education. Since having the first COVID outbreak in southeast Pennsylvania, he has worked with the state responding to COVID outbreaks in long term care facilities.
